No Picture of an 18th century Mountain
man, militiaman or hunter providing for his family would be complete without a
few major aspects. These were a gun; whether it be a smoothbore fowler or long
rifle, a pouch to carry shot, ball, flints etc, and a powder horn. A person's
powder horn became a prized possession. It often included the person's name, and
significant dates and places.

I have been making powder
horns since 1994. I pride myself on making a horn that is functional,
attractive, & a historically accurate horn of good quality. All of my work
is done by hand; very little is done any differently than it would have been
done 200 years ago, giving care & attention to each aspect of the horns
making. |

The Engraving or Scrimshaw
began with soldiers simply wanting to identify their horn, and they eventually
turned it into an art form. The scrimshaw I do is done with traditional methods.
Horns can be personalized and dated for the individual. I also use designs taken
from photographs of original horns, my own designs, and maps to decorate the
horn. |
